Exposure & Response Prevention Treatment Programming (for OCD)

Exposure & Response Prevention (or ‘ERP’) is a highly effective, non-pharmaceutical treatment for OCD.  It is a form of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Here’s how it works: the overall premise of ERP is to reduce the anxiety surrounding intrusive, obsessive thoughts so that our patients are no longer forced into engaging in time-consuming, embarrassing, and/or disruptive rituals to achieve some internal peace.  The best way to do this is to think of the obsessions as a bully who likes “pushing your buttons”, to give it a belittling nickname, and to use various techniques for “bossing back” OCD. By using the ERP ‘tools’ to reduce obsessive anxiety in a way other than giving in to the compulsions, our patients learn to “call OCD’s bluff”, realize the anxiety is beatable, and over time gain increased confidence and skill at “bossing back” increasingly difficult obsessions.

Treatment services provided, if deemed necessary, are determined in partnership with the family on an individual basis.  Services are tailored to each client's needs, and do not replicate/replace services available and/or existing within the local community.

Treatment typically includes ‘maintenance checks’ (phone check-ins) and/or ‘tune-ups’ (booster sessions) at approximately 6 weeks and 6 months.
