‘Learning About Leaky Brakes’

Presentations

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Check out the Coming Events page for a list of upcoming Brake Shop educational opportunities.
Wait-times for education can be shortened considerably when interested staff and families ‘partner up’ with these existing bookings.  All groups advertised on our website to receive education from us have been approved for public advertisement, have agreed to ‘partner up’, and would be anticipating your call.
CPRI is now a member of the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN), a not-for-profit organization supporting provincial clinical, educational, and administrative telemedicine with a broad, secure and reliable videoconferencing network spanning the continuum of community health services.”  Brake Shop consultation appointments are available via OTN upon request.
No referrals to the Brake Shop are required to book (i.e. you do not need to be a client of the Brake Shop, or affiliated with a client of the Brake Shop, to book).
All educational opportunities are free of charge.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We currently receive a high volume of requests (we serve approximately 25 school boards and hundreds of community agencies within CPRI’s catchment alone).  In order to avoid long and unwieldy education wait-lists, whilst still being efficient with our time, the following procedures are in place for booking presentations only (these procedures do not apply to Leaky Brakes 101, Peer In-services, or Training Workshops):

  • We will only accept presentation bookings for large groups.  Professional Development days for teachers/EA’s/special education staff/principals & superintendents would be appropriate bookings, as would be a community of schools combining together for a single booking.  We strongly encourage boards to utilize us for their PD days.

  • Staff for individual schools and smaller groups can make use of a presentation DVD we have created instead.  This DVD can be borrowed from CPRI’s Family Resource Centre or can be purchased by clicking here.   Local TS support group organizations, and special education departments of catchment school boards also have copies from our clinic.

To reserve a presentation, you may download the Presentation Booking Form document and mail the completed form to the address given.  Alternatively, you can call our clinic secretary at (519) 858-2774 ext. 2025.

Presentations can be delivered anywhere in the world; however, only a limited number of presentations outside CPRI’s catchment will be booked each year.  Please contact our clinic secretary to discuss.  Download the presenter biography here.

Please complete our Education Evaluation form immediately after the presentation.  Please return this evaluation to our clinic.

‘The Road to Hell… With Directions to the Exit-Ramps!’

Tourette Syndrome & associated conditions are rife with paradox and non-intuitiveness.  This presentation assumes knowledge gained from our clinic’s overview presentation, “Leaky Brakes: What They Are.  What They AREN’T.”, and provides tips on how not to accidentally make your situation catastrophically worse when you only ever intended to do good…   Download a file containing this presentation outline.

‘Cognitive-Behavioural Brake-Jobs’

Overviews of two non-pharmaceutical (i.e. drug-free) treatments are available for presentation – a Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) for tics/Tourette Syndrome, and/or Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. This presentation describes the treatment(s) when targeting a younger (i.e. child or adolescent) population.

These presentations are available for either an adult audience (i.e. parents, teachers, professionals) or in a “how-to” format for a younger audience (i.e. youth diagnosed with TS and/or OCD).  They are intended as overviews only -- to receive in-depth training for clinical staff, please visit our Training Workshops page.

‘Living In Disorder’

Dr. McKinlay will take the audience inside a variety of disorders to show "reasons for rage", to "discern depression", and "account for anxiety". Appreciate how the unique challenges and issues beyond the symptomatology described by diagnostic manuals and research can lead to a number of associated difficulties, and how without sufficient awareness these difficulties can sometimes make good children with good motives seem bad.

‘Discover Self-Esteem & Self-Advocacy’

Intended for individuals with ‘leaky brake’ disorders, and tailored to age of audience (i.e. child, adolescent, or adult).  ‘Driving tips’ and ‘t(r)ic(k)s’ on how to feel better about yourself, while also effectively communicating your difference(s) and needs to an uninformed world, is provided within a context of validation and understanding.
